The Paranormal Reality of Unclean Spirits (Demons)

Although the Bible has few references to ghosts, the New Testament goes to great lengths to discuss unclean spirits or demons. Unlike ghosts, these are not visible and do not make their presence known in a visual manner as a ghost does. Unlike our common notion of demons that have names and descriptions, these unclean spirits are only described in terms of their effects on the people they have afflicted. Even if you're not familiar or fond of the Bible, once again it represents an accurate historical record of the activities of these unclean spirits. We intend to demonstrate that during the time of Jesus, the knowledge of these unclean spirits and how they affected people was common knowledge. As in the ghost phenomenon, this knowledge has been lost over time. As you well know, ghosts have become even more popular in our modern culture. It stands to reason that the activities of these unclean spirits is also alive and well in our current society yet remains undetected for the most part. How did this reversal of importance occur? The Bible hardly mentions ghosts but puts much emphasis on unclean spirits while our current society hardly mentions unclean spirits but heavily emphasizes ghosts. It seems that the ghost phenomenon has successfully distracted us from the more important activities of unclean spirits. You will find the bulk of teaching regarding unclean spirits in the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament. Most people don't realize that one third of all Jesus did was casting out unclean spirits that were within people. There are many viewpoints on just what these unclean spirits/demons actually were but for now we will concentrate on the practical points of how they operated and how they were dealt with in biblical times.

The first incident that demonstrates the abilities of these unclean spirits (demons) is the first book of the New Testament.

Matthew 9:32-33 (NKJV)

32 As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed. 33 And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!”

This passage describes an exorcism performed by Jesus on a mute. It clearly describes the man's ability to speak returning once the demon is removed. Lets look at some other passages. Pay close attention to the effects that these unclean spirits had 2000 years ago. Also note that when the unclean spirit was removed, the person was healed.

Mark 5:1-15 (NKJV)

5 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.[a] 2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him,[b] not even with chains, 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me.” 8 For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” 9 Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. 11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine, that we may enter them.” 13 And at once Jesus[c] gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea. 14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. 15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.

This is perhaps the most dramatic confrontation between Jesus and an unclean spirit. It demonstrates that a person can have many unclean spirits and that the greater the number, the greater the ill effects. In our present society, this individual would be considered insane and would be locked up and heavily medicated never to see the light of day again. Once the unclean spirits are removed the person is reported to be in his "right mind" again. We have to ask ourselves how and why this knowledge has been forgotten over time.

Mark 9:17-22 (NKJV)

17 Then one of the crowd answered and said, “Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. 18 And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not.” 19 He answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me.” 20 Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. 21 So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe,[a] all things are possible to him who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” 5 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it: “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!” 26 Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.

The above passage clearly illustrates a mute individual with epilepsy. These conditions have certainly not diminished in our current time but instead are managed with medication. Why have we overlooked the true spiritual causes of these conditions? It is interesting to note that these unclean spirits were in the people and had to be removed. It is stated clearly that the spirit is responsible for this violent illness.

Luke 13:11-14 (NKJV)

11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. 12 But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” 13 And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

This passage illustrates the root cause of a severe spinal deformity as being spiritual in nature. When the spirit is removed, the woman is healed. Our current treatment would be numerous back surgerys and a lifetime of addictive narcotics to treat the pain. It sure seems alot simpler to remove the spiritual cause of the problem and achieve a full and proper cure.

It is not our intent to turn this into a Bible study. The point that hopefully has been made clear is that all of the above listed conditions exist today. Regardless of your opinion of Jesus at this point, it is also clear that he had true spiritual authority and not only could he recognize the root cause of these issues as a spirit, but could also remove the spirit from the person which in turn healed the person. Now lets look at a very important issue. The Bible makes it very clear that people were fully aware of these unclean spirits (demons) 2000 years ago and what troubles they were capable of causing. In the above scriptures, there is no question as to the cause of these illnesses or conditions as being unclean spirits. The people clearly state them as being the cause. The issue is that for the first time, someone is able to cast the spirits out and heal the person. Observe the following passage:

21 Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught. 22 And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him. 27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority[a] He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.

This passage confirms that Jesus was doing something never witnessed before. It was that he commanded the spirits and they listened to Him. The Bible never questions the existence of these unclean spirits (demons) and what illnesses they caused. Lets look at a few more passages.

John 7:19-20 (NKJV)

19 Did not Moses give you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” 20 The people answered and said, “You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?”

Jesus asks why they want to kill him and they respond with accusing him of having a demon (unclean spirit). This illustrates how very familiar they were with these spirits. This would be the equivalent of us saying "are you crazy?" in our modern day language. When someone spoke irrationally, it was attributed to spirits. Lets look further:

John 8:48-52 (NKJV)

48 Then the Jews answered and said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me. 50 And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks and judges. 51 Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.” 52 Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.

John 10:20-21 (NKJV)

20 And many of them said, “He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?” 21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

The point is clearly made that understanding and recognizing the work of unclean spirits was common knowledge 2000 years ago. This raises some questions. What happened to this knowledge and why haven't we retained it? Do these unclean spirits exist today? If the same sickness and disease they caused 2000 years ago still exists today then we must reason that these unclean spirits (demons) exist today as well. Have we simply been taught to attribute this to other causes and treat them with drugs? Does this spiritual authority that Jesus had over these spirits still exist today? Jesus did pass this knowledge and authority on to His disciples and to those in His church.

Matthew 10:1 (NKJV)

10 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.

Now remember, the reason you've accessed this website is because you have a spiritual intrusion in your home or in your life. Again, when a haunting gets really bad, people turn to the church. Why? because a real church has spiritual authority. More specifically, it has (hopefully) people who have this ancient knowledge intact and understand, as Jesus did, how to take control of these spirits and remove them from your life. I am not talking about sending spirits into the light, seances, or smudging with sage, etc. There is no true spiritual authority associated with these techniques. At best, the spirits will change their tactics. It might even make the situation worse. The reason the unclean spirits responded so directly to Jesus is that they ackowledged His spiritual authority as absolute. You may not agree with this but remember to keep an open mind. Lets look at the following passages.

Phillipians 2:9-10 (NKJV)

9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,

Matthew 28:18 (NKJV)

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Jesus has ultimate authority in the spirit world. Of course this brings up endless controversy and it should. Again, if you are in doubt, use His name with authority to command spirits in your house and examine the results. You can disagree all you like but observable, definite, and repeatable results cannot be argued with. Let's look at the power of using His name in the following passage:

Mark 9:38-39

38 Now John answered Him, saying, “Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us.” 39 But Jesus said, “Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in My name can soon afterward speak evil of Me.

This implies that just using the name of Jesus can remove unclean spirits. If you have ever thrown out a name of a person with authority to turn a situation in your favour you should understand the above passage. Knowing the chief of police, the local mafia boss, or the toughest guy in town will certainly gain you favour in a troubling situation. The higher the authority figure, the more favour you will gain by using their name. The same thing applies to the spirit world. The name of Jesus is the ultimate authority in the spirit world. Using His name will likewise gain you favour when dealing with intruding spirits. This may seem strange or even ridiculous to you because of our modern belief system but that doesn't mean it isn't true. Again, don't take my word for it. The next time you see a ghost in your house, regardless of who it appears to be, ask it to show it's true form in Jesus name. The next time you see a shadow person in your house, order it to leave in Jesus name. In fact, the next time you feel or see anything evil (voices, uneasy feelings, orbs, etc.), order it to leave in Jesus name. My experiences have shown me the results cannot be argued with. This first simple step in freeing yourself from unwanted paranormal interference cannot be stressed enough. Try it! What do you have to lose?

The Bible provides considerable detail on the characteristics of unclean spirits (demons). Perhaps the most interesting is that they reside inside a person and go largely undetected. There are some people who have spiritual discernment (gift of spiritual sight) and can detect unclean spirits within a person. Have you ever encountered any of the following things around a certain person?

  • Eyes changing color(black) during emotional episodes
  • Darkness around eyes and face (black haze)
  • Facial distortions (not just expressions)
  • Faint superimposed face appears on someone
  • Hearing voices or thoughts coming from a person
  • Feeling of unexplainable fear or uneasiness around a person

For those without the gift of spiritual sight, it can be as simple as learning to recognize the parts of a person's character that do not seem to fit. If you find yourself saying "what's gotten into them today?" you may be dealing with the influence of an unclean spirit. Everybody has bad days but repeated behaviours especially attached to emotionally sensitive issues can reveal the presence of an unclean spirit. A simple statement like "I bind you in the name of Jesus" will put a stop to the actions of an unclean spirit at least temporarily. If you feel you are dealing with an unclean spirit in a loved one you can "bind" the spirit to silence it temporarily but removal of the spirit requires that it's right to be in the persons body is revealed and then revoked. This requires a Holy Spirit filled person familiar with the process of deliverance or what the Catholic church calls exorcism. Exorcism is usually associated with rotting flesh and heads spinning around but this is rarely the case outside of Hollywood. A Spirit filled full Gospel Christian church will most likely have a deliverence ministry that can help you deal with an unclean spirit. Depending on the level of control an unclean spirit has in a body, it can cause illnesses, depression, anxiety, mental disorders, rage, jealousy, fears and phobias, and suicidal thoughts, just to mention a few. Our modern society no longer makes the connection between unclean spirits and these common disorders. In fact, you might find yourself being severely ridiculed for even mentioning this stuff.
